When ears get hot – create your individual earmuffs

Finally it is summer time, skies are blue and sunny…and we start sweating in our cabins! Having headsets with plastic earmuffs becomes more and more uncomfortable. Yes, there are of-the-shelf cotton solutions, but somehow we have doomed them as “too standard and boring” – definitelty and very simply no chicks’ material.

So it was up to me to become creative and spend a rainy day with some wool and my knitting neddles.

To make such individual earmuffs will not take you more than an hours. I simply use big needles (6 1/2) not only to have an easy job, but also to keep the cover airy and not muffle the radio sounds. My preferred material is pure cotton wool…in as bright colours as possible! I start with 30 loops, then knit 24 rows (right loop one way, left loop on the way back) to finish with 26 rows in total. To shape the knitted square and attach it to the hedset later, I take 26 cm of elastic band, running it all the way around the square’s edge going in and out ever 3-4 loops. Knotting the elastics at the end … and you are already done.

Needless to say that we got quite some funny looks and big smiles when turning up with this. But more and more people ask for a guide to make some themselves (or ask their wife to do so :-)). By now I also carry a spare set with me should I borrow club headsets for passengers adding not only to their comfort, but also adding to the hygiene of use common equipment.
