Nordish by nature-Flying from Itzehoe Hungriger Wolf EDHF

Nordish by nature-flying from EDHF

Family time in Northern Germany-usually no time to escape for a quick flight and if there is the Northern weather is against me…but this time all works out: blue skies, 33 degrees, a C172 and flight instructor Olli available to hit the skies! Previously a military air field Hungriger Wolf is now home to pilots near Itzehoe and conveniently located about 30 minutes drive of the town I grew up.

Let’s get airborne and out off this heat! Ready for departure RW 21

From EDHF we head South West for a few minutes: no way I can fly here without getting a few shots of my old playing grounds and family houses!

Glückstadt from the air-founded 1617 by Danish king Christian IV. Famous for its star shaped market square and its ambition to compete to Hamburg catching the ship sailing up the Elbe. Thankfully this ambition failed and leaves a nice quiet town with seaside flair for today’s visitors and city commuters.

From here we fly IFR-follow the river- to get me is to the Northern Sea. The sun is glittering in the retreating sea, displaying tidal creeks and putting big happy smiles on our faces.

Happiness is when you escape the heat on the ground
Mudflats-sit back, relax, enjoy

Further North we head: flying over the field St Peter Ording heading to Husum. “The grey town near the sea” does not at all look grey and boring but rather nice: harbour, castle and the green park right in the middle, famous for its colourful crocus displays in spring. And again….and airport nearby to go on our to do list for the next visit!

Much too soon it is time to head back. However, another flight is booked in two days time and I know I will be counting the days! Why did I wait for this so long?
